i would like to take ballet. what supplies do i need (in particular shoes) to start? and are the shoes expensive?

You will need:
ballet slipper
leotard, usually the studio prefers black
pink ballet tights
and if you want legwarmers, a shrug or a wrapskirt
also with your ballet slipper there are a few different options
split sole- i prefer this, i can get onto a higher releve (which is good) and have more freedom to dance in
full sole- i don’t like this as much, restrict your releves
Canvas- i prefer this, you can wash it when it gets dirty and and fits to your food right away
leather- you cannot wash these, but it wil slowly start to fit the shape of your foot perfectly much better than canvas but for the first while they are loose and dont fit well usually
I would also recommend getting them professionally fitted for your first time since sometimes you have to get a street size up or a couple down,( the sizes are wacky) and if you get the wrong size it become very uncomfortable and bad for your feet, especially if you ahve narrow or wide feet you should get it specialized for that (and that’s free btw)
also there are many different barnds: capezio, bloch, leos, i personally i have sansha which i quite like.
also same with a leotard- go to your local dance store to try on a few, the bigger the store the more options*

My daughter will be 15 months on Halloween and she is going to be a purple plush unicorn with a sparkle mane and rainbow tail. It’s a zip up suit with the unicorn head worn on her head. The legs are elastisized at the ankles. I have no idea what kind of shoes she should wear with this outfit. She’s a size 5 in shoes. Any suggestions? Or links to sites? Thanks!

I would get sneakers. When my grand was that age we found a pair of sparkly. silver glitter type sneakers that looked so cute!
The next year she went as "Dorky". That’s what she kept telling me any way, she really wanted to be Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. We used red glitter MJ’s with that.
I still have the shoes and she’s 12.
I’d take the stroller too if your going more than a couple of houses!

I just bought black pants and a slightly sparkly black top to wear to my work Christmas party. I am planning on adding a little color with accessories, but I still needs shoes. Of course my first option would be black shoes, but I was wondering if it would be a faux pas to wear maybe gray shoes or some other color. Just to break up the black.

It is difficult enough for most women to get their husbands to go with them anywhere to shop. The agony that they go through when they have to go find shoes for men is a whole different ballgame. The shoes for men today are not like they were even 5 years ago. They used to come in simple styles and simple sizes. You simply picked up the one you wanted, asked the salesperson to bring it to you in the size you told her and it appeared like magic.
Men seemed, back then, to concentrate on fishing or golf more than shopping for a pair of shoes. They certainly loved their pickup trucks and their time at the ballpark with the grand kids. The shoes for men back then afforded them a comfortable lifestyle, in an economical model that would not break the family budget and would allow him to roam to his hearts content through whatever debris he wanted.
